O you who believe! Observing As-Saum (the fasting) is prescribed for you as it was prescribed for those before you, that you may become Al-Muttaqûn (the pious - see V.2:2). (2:183)
Here are some hadith regarding it:
In Paradise there is a gate called al-Rayyaan, through those who fast will enter, and no one will enter it except them; when they have entered it will be locked, and no-one else will enter through it. (al-Bukhaari, Fath, no. 1797).
Fasting is not about starving yourself until its time to eat...instead its more of a self check on your actions throughout the day.
"Whoever does not stop speaking falsehood and acting in accordance with it, Allaah has no need of him giving up his food and drink.”
(Al-Bukhaari, al-Fath, no. 1903).
